A group of private companies are proposing to construct a dangerous dump for nuclear waste near the Ottawa River.
Former senior nuclear scientists and first nations groups say this proposal is seriously flawed, employs inadequate technology, and "fails to meet regulatory requirements with respect to the health and safety of persons and the protection of the environment."
International nuclear safety guidelines state that a surface dump like the one being proposed can only support certain types of nuclear waste. However, this dump is proposed to house nuclear waste that exceeds these requirements, in violation of these guidelines.
The dump is proposed to be located in a swampy area, which according to a senior scientist in nuclear safety management could cause radioactive material to leach into the surrounding ecosystem and eventually into our drinking water.
Mayors of over 130 municipalities in Quebec and Ontario, including every Montreal-area mayor, oppose this dump.
It's time for Ottawa City Council to follow the lead set by 130 other municipalities and pass a motion condemning the dangerous dump being built upstream from our city. Sign your name to say no to nuclear waste in the Ottawa River!
